Why quiz has become so popular
Quizzes can be found in newspapers, magazines, on the internet or at your local pub. Schools are also using quizzing as a way of learning, and many play quizzes with a high degree of seriousness. Even though the nerd factor of the game cannot be denied, most people play for fun and see it as a way to socialize.
There is no question that quiz can be a setting for social interaction. Just look at such phenomenon as Easter quiz and pub quizzes, and what significance they have had. However, is that the only reason for quiz being so popular overall?
A good quiz triggers the small grey ones in our brain. In quiz competitions, there will be questions about the strangest things within any number of topics, often topics like literature, politics, geography, history and so on. It can also be harder questions, like chemical compounds and astronomy.
When taking a quiz on your own, you must depend entirely on yourself, but if you are playing as a team, you can gather a group of people with individual areas of expertise. This will increase the chances to beat the competing team.
In this article, we will investigate the quiz phenomenon and its impact from its origins to today. We might even get a little closer to an explanation to its popularity.
Quiz in a historical view
It is not hard to visualize how knowledge and learning were exchanged a thousand years ago, between individuals over a campfire or in a cave, and that it works the same way up until our time. The purpose might have been learning between generations, but it is natural to think that the competitive aspect formed as civilizations grew.
There is no clear evidence for where or when the concept of quiz first occurred, but there is evidence that the word quiz comes from England sometime in the 17’t century. At the time, a quiz was equivalent with someone who today might be called a nerd, or a bezzerwisser. They were often young confident men in the upper crust of society, with a good education, monocles, and a refined language. They were eager to show off their knowledge in order to climb on the social ladder. This could be in the student environment such as Oxford and Cambridge or among nobility and royalty. It is not far fetched to think that the word is derived from the word “question”
Sometime into the 1900’s, media started evolving and we got radio and television. The very first quiz shows started around the 70’s, and shows like “Double or nothing, “Jeopardy” became popular shows for the entire family.
Many call it easy-going entertainment, with simple prerequisites, but with difficult subjects. As entertainment, there is often the excitement associated with answers and points that give effect.
Questions about relatively unknown composers, metal and what words and sentences that are hiding behind the tiles became great entertainment. Not only for honor and glory, but one could win prizes and money as well.
Different types of quiz
Quiz comes in many forms and shapes. Some of them in a dark room, with good beer on tap, others might play alone in front of a computer screen. Questions can be simple or hard, such as:
- Which group of hospital patients gets an Apgar score?
- Which French abbreviation corresponds to the UK CEO, ie CEO?
- What is the name of the debut novel of Agnes Ravatn from 2007?
- Which person in Genesis was both uncle and father-in-law to Jacob?
(The questions are freely shortened and simplified in this article).
Let’s look at some different quiz types.
Logo quiz is a type of quiz where you are presented with the logos of different more or less world-renowned companies. It often starts out relatively easy, an example may be Coca-Cola or Visa. But eventually, it becomes much more complicated and difficult. Less well-known companies are presented with their logo. There are several applications with logo quiz or games which can be found on different platforms. Some of the most famous logo quizzes can be found on Appstore (for Apple products) or Google Play (for Android).
Logo quiz can deal specifically with foods (Food Quiz Norway), car brands (car quiz) or football clubs. While other quizzes can be about all possible logos that are made. Some of the most popular logo quiz apps are:
- Logo Game: Guess Brands
- What`s that Logo?
- Logos Quiz
- Guess the Logo
- Guess Brand Logo
- 100 PICS quiz
- Logo Quiz Ultimate
The pub quiz might be the most social type of quiz, where camaraderie, beer, and competition spirit play a very important role. Participants have studied all kinds of topics and holds a lot of fantastic knowledge about the height of mountains, size of different cities, presidential first ladies and so on.
Pub quizzes are usually arranged in student environments, job arrangements or simply at the local pub
It is clearly the venue that makes people gather around a pub quiz. It may seem unpretentious, but basically, it’s a fierce battle among the most eager quiz participants. You can relax, have a good drink with friends, while the battles are fought on the stage by the dance floor. A pub quiz can be finished with people toasting with tall glasses. It’s not hard to ask people to attend a pub quiz, although the environment may be for those who like to unfold in order of American presidents, elements and soccer results in the lower divisions in 1977.
The Norwegian quiz association has information about different pub quizzes around the world. We will look at this association a bit later on in this article.
Easter quiz is something that has got a strong foothold here in Norway. This may be a variation of the tv show “Easter Nuts” that have been on NRK since the 1970s, with hosts like Roald Øyen and lately, the hosts Bache and Gokstad. Every year there is a show called “Easter Labirynth”, which draws many listeners. In particular Viggo Valle`s “Where are we going?” That’s a show that makes Norwegians gather at their DAB radios. This is more comparable to a rebus race, where the contestants try to find out where Viggo wants to go, through a variety of hints and tips.
There is no reason to limit quiz to Easter if you love quiz. Just pick the next weekend, Monday, payday or birthdays for a quiz with friends and rivals.
Quiz about traffic
Traffic quiz is something that has become more and more relevant over time. Many find it both educational and entertaining to learn more about traffic rules and what the risks are if you break the rules. This might not be a game for a Vorspiel, but what is quite certain is many need to refresh their old knowledge.
It is obvious that the traffic quiz can be used as a fun form of learning traffic theory, for instance before you have your final test for your theoretical driver’s test. Many struggles with this test and must take the test several times. This test consists of multiple choice answer, where the answers could be right or wrong.
Instead of cramming a boring textbook on signs, traffic rules and how the engine works, a traffic quiz is much more rewarding and interesting to many. Even if you cheat, you will nevertheless learn something when you see the answer.
Schools are always looking for new ways to enhance the kids learning, and to make them more engaged. Quiz is part of the learning plan, and there are several apps such as “Kahoot”. This form of quiz is especially entertaining as the children also learn about technology and communication. They can make their own questions and answers, and the winner is revealed after a given time has elapsed. The one who has answered correctly first will get the most points on that question, and so on.
There are many quizzes that are suitable for age-specific children, thus suitable for primary school children, high school children, and high school students. Even kindergarten children can join a quiz.
Quiz as a tool for learning
Quiz is first and foremost a way to gather around an unpretentious moment with questions in a competitive setting. Many, however, think that you can use quiz as a method of learning. This is probably the way in which one remember a lot of data and information that makes them think so. Even though there are many ways to memorize and remember things, most quizzes say something about reality. In fact, it can be everything between heaven and earth.
By joining a quiz team, you will also learn to perform under pressure. The quiz setting can be a very stressful setting, especially if it’s about more than just honor and gloating rights. Even then you might start to sweat from the face when you don’t remember which king ruled in Norway between the years 1103 and 1130. Or which Volvo model was produced in the post-war years 1946-1950.
Whether this provides important knowledge is something the experts can discuss for many years. However, what is certain is that you will be able to build a substantial factual knowledge that allows you to comment on and understand a variety of functions in society and nature, but you may not understand the essentials. This, however, is perhaps something you might want to achieve in other ways.
There is no doubt that many who love quiz sit inside with many facts and interesting details, which might give them a reputation as a bit of a “knowitall”, or a «Besserwizzer”. Probably why a Danish man, Bulöw developed a board game with the same name “Besserwizzer”. The word “Besserwizzer” is often considered somewhat negative in many contexts. That might be a little bit of a misconception. A “Besserwizzer” might be considered arrogant and dry, but in fact, he is shy and introverted.
Regardless of whether the quiz has any measurable effect on learning or not, conditions are set for more learning. Playing in a safe environment will always have a good effect. What use one might have for knowledge about celebrities who died in 1953 or Peruvian football players is not clear. Bu ton a quiz night, you can shine!.

How to start a quiz-klubb?
It’s not hard to gather a bunch of people for an unpretentious quiz night. All you need is a sofa, a table, a panel, and a referee. It might be somewhat harder to make it official. A team or association can be created, but you must register it in the Brønnøysund Register under a coordinated register. There are some things that are required to make a quiz club or association:
- The name of the club
- Location and municipalityFormål
- Creation of board and annual meeting
- Members and board positions
- Rules for amendments to the articles of association
But first and foremost, you need an avid gang who will join the quiz club. This will be a great leisure time where you can come together in social gatherings for knowledge, exploration, and competition. As you get better and more knowledgeable, you can attend pub quizzes in the nearest city or town. An overview of the current quiz can be found on this website.

We’ve seen that it’s a pretty big nerd factor when it comes to quiz. And that’s how it will stay. However, a quiz is something that can suit everyone. Regardless of age, gender, and interest, a quiz is something that appeals to most people. It’s because it’s fun, social and brings out the competitive instincts in us.
First and foremost, the quiz is an unpretentious gathering, but when the quizzes are becoming more serious, everything becomes more difficult. It’s when you manage to answer in these old saloon venues, you really can become a good quizzer. That’s when you become a part of an environment where knowledge and passion are exchanged. It is the so-called pub quiz, and it is often associated with dark rooms and a good drink.
However, there is wrong in making a junior quiz on the digital media available for this. Some favorites are logo quiz, flag quiz and geography quiz.
The great thing about such parlor games is that they can break the ice in a straightforward way, and gets everyone involved in the game. It’s when the quiz becomes difficult for even the most experienced ones that the quiz becomes really exciting. When the less experienced are left in the dust, only the best quizzers are still there.
There are many ways to arrange a quiz, but the professional championships are still subject to strict rules against cheating and sabotage.
Quiz is very popular and whether you choose the simple online versions or a team competition in a pub quiz, you will be part of a group of people with a lot of knowledge onboard.
